ENDOCRINOLOGY

Why Study Endocrinology?

Basically, Endocrinology is a branch of medicine that deals with the study of endocrine glands and their secretions(hormones).

The Endocrine system involves important life processes such as growth, reproduction, and homeostasis.

The scope of the subject makes it interesting and attractive.

So here is an overview of the Endocrine system :D

Endocrine system and Growth

The effects of Growth Hormones

Boys and Girls develop striking differences in physical appearance and behavior as they enter puberty.

In women, Estrogen(primary female sex hormones) promotes the development of female secondary sex characteristics which include accumulation of adipose tissue in breasts and hips, a widened pelvis sculpting a feminine shape.

Also, estrogen contributes to the fact that women have less facial hair and smoother skin than male.

At the same time or later, Testosterone levels increases this causes the male to develop a low-pitched voice, build muscle mass, produce sperm, and  get facial and body hair.

Endocrine system and Reproduction

The Gift of Life

What controls the functioning of the reproductive system? --> Endocrine system

The Endocrine glands responsible for the manufacturing of the reproductive hormones such as "estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and adrogen" are the gonads.

The male gonads/testes are located in the scrotum, they secrete testosterone which regulates the production of sperm(male gamete).

The female gonads/ovaries are located  in the pelvis, they produce ovum or eggs(female gamete).

There is Fertilization when the male and female gametes "merge" and then the development of fetus occurs.

The Endocrine gland secretions(hormones) play a great role in maintaining the balance of our body it is done by regulating the activity of the smooth muscle, cardiac muscle; alter metabolism; influence reproductive processes and many other hormonal activity.
