Toxicology

 Hi guys! this is my second blog! It is intended for those with little or no background in Toxicology.

 Did you know that eating a PEANUT is life-threatening for some people??

baby peanut allery! :(

 The is baby peanut allergy because of the weak/immature immune system of the baby which causes the allergy. (It mistakes the proteins seen in peanuts as a threat to the body so the body produces antibodies against them)

end result ---> allergic reactions

Stuff like these are part of Toxicology.

So what is TOXICOLOGY?

toxins, toxicants and poisons

-It is a branch of Biology, Chemistry, and medicine which deals with the study of the effects of chemicals on living organisms

-It is also used in sciences involved with the development and regulation of food additives, sciences involved with the use of remediation of hazardous chemicals.

 What are the Factors that influence chemical toxicity?

1) Dosage - The amount of therapeutic agent administered

                                  *Single large exposures - Acute*
                              *Continuous small exposures - Chronic*

2) Mode of Transmission/Route of Exposure -

            *Either by ingestion, inhalation, intravenous/skin absorption

3) Other factors - This includes: individual characteristic of a person, age, sex, health, environment, etc
